The Moderating Effects of Supervisory Relationship between Novice Counselors¡¯ Difficulty and Psychological Burnout

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effects of the supervisory relationship between novice counselors¡¯ difficulty and psychological burnout. A total of 156 novice counselors working at counseling agencies or organizations participated in this study. The results of this study were as follows. First, novice counselors¡¯ difficulty showed a positive correlation with psychological burnout, and supervisory relationship showed a negative correlation with novice counselors¡¯ difficulty and psychological burnout. Second, among the sub-factors of the supervisory relationship, reflective education and structure had significant moderating effects between novice counselors¡¯ difficulty and psychological burnout. These effects were more significant when novice counselors¡¯ difficulty level was low. In conclusion, this study suggests the importance of providing more educational and systematic supervision to alleviate the effects of novice counselors¡¯ difficulty on psychological burnout. Furthermore, this study provides evidence to investigate other protective factors for novice counselors to cope with psychological burnout.
